NONE BUT LUCIFER [novel fragment]. TYPEWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT (TMs). A mixture of ribbon and carbon copy. 38 leaves; ribbon copy (paged 1-3, 4-6 [paged "4, 5, 6" on a single sheet] 7-27); carbon copy (paged 28-40). An unpublished incomplete manuscript draft for a projected novel version, dating from about 1990. The novella, first published in UNKNOWN (September 1939), was never reprinted during Gold's lifetime because he refused all reprint permission requests and announced repeatedly in public during the last several decades of his life that he was revising and finishing this novel length version of what was once his most famous work published in the pulps. It is edited fairly heavily, with revisions handwritten by Gold on every page but the first. This version is unique as these revisions are not incorporated into the text of the 2002 expanded version bylined by H. L. Gold and L. Sprague de Camp published after Gold's death. An interesting artifact of the pulp era writer who became more famous later in life as the editor of GALAXY. Very good or better overall (#155698).
