"Mr. Seabrook is one of the many persons first encouraged to write by H. L. Mencken in the early days of the AMERICAN MERCURY. He turned his travels ... to good account by writing vivid, colorful descriptions of some very unusual experiences ... he participated in Voodoo rites in Haiti and ate human flesh in Africa ..." - Kunitz and Haycraft, Twentieth Century Authors, p. 1254. This book may have influenced Fritz Leiber, but in any case was widely read by SF and fantasy writers upon publication.
