(#165880) ARSARETH: A TALE OF THE LURAY CAVERNS. Warren.

ARSARETH: A TALE OF THE LURAY CAVERNS. New York: A. Lovell & Co., [1893]. Octavo, pp. [1-2] [1-5] 6-273 [274: blank], flyleaves at front and rear, original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, all edges plain. First edition. "Turgid sentimental melodrama set in ante-bellum Virginia, with a few live coals of occult interest buried under a mound of ash. An eccentric Virginian, while letting his farm go to seed, uses his sensitive daughter's clairvoyance and a Ouija board to locate buried treasure in a nearby cave, left by a remnant of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Most of the story, however, is taken up with a romantic triangle involving the daughter and two suitors, plus a good deal of nostril-flaring about honor. According to the gift inscription in another copy of the book, the author was a clergyman from Deals Island, Delaware. One wonders: with his initials, what else could he have been?" - Robert Eldridge. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 786. Bleiler (1978), p. 203 (giving publisher in error as "C. Lovell" and pagination incorrectly as 276 pages). Reginald 14897. Wright (III) 5805. Small private owner's book label affixed to the front paste-down. Cloth worn at edges, a sound, good copy. (#165880).
