GEOLOGIC HISTORY OF THE YOSEMITE VALLEY. Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1930. 29x23 cm (large octavo), pp. [i-ii] iii-vi 1-137 [138: blank], double columns, 46 plates, 38 figures in the text, 6 maps (some folded), buff wrappers printed in black. In his presentation of this paper based on extensive study of the geology of the central Sierra Nevada, Matthes attempted "to set forth these facts and interpretations in language intelligible to the general reader as well as to the scientist." This effort produced the classic study of the geological structure of the Yosemite region which geologist Fritiof Fryxell, co-worker and friend of Matthes, termed "one of the great classics of geological literature and a well-nigh inexhaustible source of information on the subject." Private library stamp on front cover and on title page. Minor tape reinforcement at top and bottom edges of spine panel, a very good copy. Excellent condition for this book. (#165966).
