Due to height limitations in their erecting shops, the Dickson Manufacturing Company of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was limited to the manufacture of light freight and passenger locomotives, or industrial types. In 1901 the company became a unit of the newly formed American Locomotive Works. At about this time American railroad lines began ordering heavier freight and passenger locomotives and Alco closed the Dickson plant in 1909. In addition to reproducing the Dickson locomotive catalogue for 1885, an appendix lists the 1334 locomotives built by the Dickson Manufacturing Company between 1862 and its acquisition by the American Locomotive Works.
