First and last each 2 pages, the two others each 1 page, dated 26 May 1978, 12 February 1985, 25 October 1985, 15 March 1987, all to "Dear Kirby" [McCauley], signed "Russell." All on thermographed letterhead with Piety Hill, Mecosta, Mich. address. Together with various enclosures. Four letters to Kirk's literary agent which deal with a miscellany of business matters in a fairly businesslike manner, with references to Kirk's political writings (he was an important voice in American conservative thought) as well as to his supernatural fiction; OLD HOUSE OF FEAR, PRINCESS OF ALL LANDS, and what became LORD OF THE HOLLOW DARK (referred to here by its various working titles: ESSENCES, THAT ARCHAIC SMILE, and BALGRUMMO LODGING), as well as placement of several new short stories. Of his supernatural fiction, Bleiler writes, "Kirk accomplishes the unusual feat of writing convincingly about both Great Britain and small-town America" (The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, p. 293). "Kirk's voice in modern terror fiction is unique …." - The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 248. Kirby McCauley was probably the most important literary agent of horror, fantasy and sf writers in the boom years of the 1970s and 1980s. Faint creases, but overall the letters are in fine condition.
