TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS). 1/3 page, dated 31 July 1978, to "Dear Kirby" [McCauley], signed "Manly." On plain letter-size paper with Wellman's Chapel Hill address typed at the top. Covering letter for a story (not present) "based on the old country saying about a place so far back from other habitations that 'they have possums for yard dogs and the owls hoot in the daytime.'" Suggests McCauley send it on to Stuart Schiff for publication in WHISPERS III, if McCauley doesn't want it. McCauley published the story ("Owls Hoot in the Daytime") in his influential 1978 anthology, DARK FORCES. Wellman, rising above his pulp roots, was accomplished in nearly all genres of popular fiction, and was noted for bringing a pungent American flavor to his work. Kirby McCauley was probably the most important literary agent of horror, fantasy and sf writers in the boom years of the 1970s and 1980s. Faint mailing folds, small chip from lower left corner, cheap paper a bit tanned, else near fine. (#102738).
