TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS). 1 page, dated 26 March 1979, to "Dear Kirby" [McCauley], signed "Manly." On plain letter-size paper with Wellman's Chapel Hill address typed at the top. Wellman mentions an as-yet-unsold story, "The Finger of Halugra," about an avenging idol robbed of his finger, which might be suitable for "Lin Carter's new anthologies." As for something "fresh," he "might come up with a story about John Thunstone, who had lots of adventures in WT after Farnsworth Wright left." If Lo Brutto (Wellman's editor at Doubleday) "feels strongly about another John novel, I'll try to work one out... Several times, I've wondered about John as a distance runner, if he isn't better on a short, fast pull." (Brian Stableford seems to have had similar doubts: "The Silver John novels have not the delicacy of the best short stories, but are interesting by virtue of their elaboration of a curious syncretic mythology based in an imaginary U.S. prehistory." - Clute and Nicholls [eds], The Encyclopedia of Fantasy [1997], p. 1003.) He mentions the Kardios stories and devotes a paragraph to some difficulties with CAHENA, his historical novel published in 1986, the year of his death. Wellman, rising above his pulp roots, was accomplished in nearly all genres of popular fiction, and was noted for bringing a pungent American flavor to his work. Kirby McCauley was probably the most important literary agent of horror, fantasy and sf writers in the boom years of the 1970s and 1980s. Good content. Faint mailing folds, several light creases, else fine. (#102742).
