HARD LANDING [outline and portion of a novel]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT (TMs). 68 leaves, computer printout on rectos of plain letter-size paper. This document is of particular interest for its outline, giving a glimpse into the planning process of a significant writer. It does of course diverge from the final published book. This novel (F&SF October/November 1992; Warner Books, 1993), the first Budrys had published in fifteen years, and a Nebula nominee, tells of the five members of a downed UFO, alien but humanoid in appearance and only slightly advanced technologically over us, as they try to blend into their new environment and survive. "... short but densely compact ... The tale, complexly told, conveys a hard dry mature melancholy irony" (SFE online). Budrys was one of the post-World War II writers of SF who sought to bring literary heft and polish to the genre. Fine condition throughout. (#104873).
