(#105660) DWELLERS IN THE HILLS. Melville Davisson Post.

DWELLERS IN THE HILLS. New York and London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1901. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [i-iv] v-vi [vii-viii] 1-278 [279-282: ads] [283-284: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks], original pictorial cloth, front panel stamped in black, orange, yellow and gold, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. A West Virginia western, scornful of those recent newcomers raising cattle out on the western plains, whereas the West Virginians have been cattlemen and drovers for seventy-five years. Sort of a western adventure/romance, written before gentrification set in, but with most of the earmarks. Men, horses, cattle, women. And there's a legend that dwarfs lived in these hills, before men. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 P-542. Owner's signature on front free endpaper, newspaper clipping (Post obituary 23 June 1930) affixed to front paste-down. Top edge dusty, else a clean, tight, very good copy with bright cover stamping. (#105660).
