Octavo, pp. [i-viii] ix-x [xi-xii] [1] 2-336 + 4 pages of publisher's ads dated "September, 1897" inserted at rear, sixteen inserted plates with illustrations by E. S. Hope, one inserted map, original decorated red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in green and black, white, plain laid paper endpapers. First British edition. This edition apparently followed the U.S. Putnam edition by a few months. A variant, perhaps later, binding. Copies are more often seen in green cloth stamped in gold and blind. M. P. Shiel collaborated with Tracy on the novel, writing chapters 29-39. Adventure novel set in the near future concerning an American financier who devises a scheme to irrigate large areas of the Sahara.
