First U.S. edition. The author's third book, travel sketches, mostly New York state locales -- the Hudson River, the Catskills, Niagara Falls, Saratoga, and Lake George. The book is notable for the many wood engravings by J. W. Orr after drawings by Hudson River school artist John Frederick Kensett, "one of the most popular landscape painters of his day." - Hamilton 948. BAL 4263. Plum 535. Private owner's bookplate on front paste-down. Early owner's signature in ink dated September 1852 on front free endpaper. Spine faded to brown, shallow chipping to spine ends and several short splits along outer joints, some foxing to text block, still a sound, very good copy. (#110269).
