A RIDE ON A CYCLONE. Chicago, New York, and San Francisco: Belford, Clarke & Company Publishers. London: H. J. Drane ..., [1889]. Octavo, pp. [3-6] 7-178 [note: text complete despite gap in pagination, flyleaves at front and rear, 26 inserted plates with illustrations by H. Clay Coultaus, original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold white endpapers with floral pattern printed in orange. First edition. Wealthy Prussian magnate, Baron Porzig, is lifted up from his vast cattle ranch in Idaho by a cyclone which destroys everything else in sight and is deposited, still asleep in his bed, on the rooftop of a Manhattan brownstone occupied by one of the 400. A society romance ensues, presumably enlivened by the cyclone-ride premise, whose discovery, however, is drawn out with agonizing slowness and histrionic professions of disbelief. Some interesting asides on business practices of the day, trusts, livestock dealing, etc. Bleiler (1978), p. 14. Reginald 00798. Not in Wright. Owner's inscription dated 1893 on front flyleaf. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends, a very good copy. (#111406).
