(#112300) THE SHEPHERD'S PIPE AND OTHER STORIES. Authorized Translation from the German by O. F. Theis. Arthur Schnitzler.

THE SHEPHERD'S PIPE AND OTHER STORIES. Authorized Translation from the German by O. F. Theis. New York: Nicholas L. Brown, 1922. Small octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-169 [170: blank] [171-176: publisher's ads], original pictorial gray cloth, front, spine and rear panels stamped in white, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition of this translation. Issued as volume three of Brown's "Sea Gull Library." Contains three stories: "The Shepherd's Pipe," "The Murderer," and "The Blind Geronimo and His Brother." The first and last of these are found in TRAUM UND SCHICKSAL... (1931), listed in Bloch's Bibliographie der Utopie und Phantastik 1650 -1950 (#2809). The translations are "not wholly accurate nor respectful." - Morgan, A Critical Bibliography of German Literature in English Translation, p. 439. In his introduction, Theis admits the difficulty of his task as a translator, comparing the original to "the later Henry James." Schnitzler was an Austrian writer who expressed some of the world-weariness that swept Europe after the First World War. Several lines on page 8 (introduction) are underlined in ink, else a near fine copy in very good dust jacket with shelf wear at edges. (#112300).
