TOLD AT 'THE PLUME'. London: Hurst & Blackett, Ltd., n.d. [1921]. Octavo, pp. [1-9] 10-283 [284: blank] + 16-page publisher's catalogue dated "August, 1921" inserted at rear, original red cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in black. New edition, revised and expanded. Sixteen stories set in Dartmoor and written in the author's style of regionalistic realism. Several involve adventure and crime. An inadvertent reissue of THE OLD TIME BEFORE THEM (1913) with revised text, "The Old Canal" omitted and two stories added, "Gaffer" and "The Red Riding-Hoods." According to Hinton, "it was printed as a new book through an accident in handling the manuscript and was suppressed." "'Captain Barker's Bell' uses an old ghost story for its background." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 409. Hubin (1994), p. 645. Hinton, p. 68. Publisher's "compliments" stamp on title page; early owner's name dated November 1921 on front free endpaper. Spine ends show some wear, spine a bit sunned and soiled, front free endpaper tanned, else a very good copy. (#113448).
