CASHIERED AND OTHER WAR TALES. London: James Nisbet & Co., Limited, 1902. Octavo, pp. [1-12] [1-2] 3-288 [289-292: ads] [note: first leaf is a blank], original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. A presentation copy with unsigned inscription on a slip of paper from Balfour "with the author's kind regards," apparently to Augustine Fitz Gerald, whose armorial bookplate is affixed to the front paste-down below the inscribed slip. Also present is the signature of Clara E. Fitz Gerald. A collection of ten stories set in Africa during the Boer War by a pioneer of preventive medicine and author, primarily of romances under the influence of Stevenson and Haggard. Strongly flavored fiction with vivid details. According to the author's "note," all of the stories in CASHIERED are original to this collection with the exception of the title story which appeared in CHAMBERS'S JOURNAL in a slightly different form. Binding leaned, ppine panel sunned, several damp stains to cloth and endpapers, still a tight, good copy with clean text block. An uncommon book. (#114393).
