THE MOUNTAIN OF FEARS. New York: A. S. Barnes & Co., 1905. Octavo, pp. [1-10] 1-301 [302: blank] [303-310: ads], inserted frontispiece with illustration by Charles R. Macauley, original decorated red cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. A collection of eight loosely linked stories featuring Dr. Leyden, a collector and supplier of curiosities -- animal, vegetable and mineral -- to museums. Adventure stories with exotic settings, vivid local color and a leaning towards the horrific and fantastic. "Two Gentlemen" concerns a peculiarly humanoid dog. The title story, set in Papua, is an effective and enigmatic weird tale. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 R-576. Light wear at spine ends, some rubbing to cloth along bottom edges, top edge of text block dusty, a very good copy. (#115248).
