The title story is a conte cruel involving a romantic triangle, a game of chess, and electrocution. The next three are supernatural tales with medical and antiquarian backgrounds. The fifth is a detective story with an antiquarian and occult setting and a rationalized ending. The last is a humorous of tale of a future, Sovietized Britain. Pleasantly written stories, showing evident knowledge of medical, academic and Eastern milieus, but without much dramatic punch. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 49.
