CHRISTMAS EVE AT FINNSTAD. Translated from the Swedish ... by Margaret Sperry. [Stockholm: Ivar Haeggstroms Boktryckeri A. B., 1950.]. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-24 [25] [26-28: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original decorated wrappers printed in black, red and yellow, sewn. First edition of this translation. A short, engaging Christmas fantasy that blends Scandinavian pagan lore with the widespread Christian tradition that on every Christmas eve the power of speech is granted to animals to commemorate their presence at the birth of Jesus in the manger. Vivid imagery and restrained religiosity make for an intriguing story. The "werewolf" that makes an appearance here is not a supernatural being in the usual sense of that term. A touch of wrinkling to edges of wraps and a hint of dustiness to rear cover, generally a near fine copy. Scarce. (#117745).
