First U.S. edition, mixed printing. This copy agrees with Clark's points for his second printing of volume one, including contents leaf preceding preface and signature mark "1*" on page vii, and his first printing of volume two, including signature mark "4*" on page 197. According to the publisher's cost books, there were three printings before publication totaling 8000 copies. BAL gives the publication as 28 February 1860 and states that the book was issued during the period 1-15 March 1860. Clark says the book was "presumably" published 7 March 1860. The British Library received their copy 15 March 1860 and the book was deposited for copyright 10 April 1860. This is an early copy with a gift inscription on the front flyleaf of volume one dated New York 16 March 1860. Attebery, The Fantasy Tradition in American Literature, p. 51. Bleiler (1978), p. 96.
