First edition. A popular book in its day, and the author's best known book today. Judson, a well-known writer and missionary, was born in Eaton, New York, near Hamilton, New York. As a young teacher in Utica, New York, she began to publish sketches of village life under the name Fanny Forester, and established a reputation as a writer. In 1845, visiting Philadelphia at the age of twenty eight, she met one of her childhood heroes, the Rev. Adoniram Judson, became his third wife, and went with him to Burma to do Baptist missionary work. Seriously ill after his death in 1850, Judson returned to America in 1851 and died in 1854 in Hamilton, New York. Signature of early owner L. C. Webber on front free endpaper and on front flyleaf. Cloth worn and spine ends and corners, several spots to cloth, text block a bit shaken, several small stains to a few pages, still a sound, good copy. (#130254).
