LA BELLE-NIVERNAISE AND OTHER STORIES. New York, Boston: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., [1895]. Small octavo, pp. [1-6] [1-3] 4-221 [222: blank], illustrations in the text by Emile Montegut, original decorated green cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, front panel stamped in blind. First U.S. edition of this collection. The contents are similar to those in the 1887 Routledge edition, but the Crowell edition adds "Jarjaille's Visit to the Good God," a humorous after-death tale based on a Provencal legend. The title novella is a sentimental and humorous story of the working class. Also included are four unrelated short stories: "The Fig and the Idler" (here titled "The Fig and the Sluggard"), "My First Dress Coat," "The Three Low Masses" (here titled "Father Balaguere's Christmas Feast"), a supernatural tale in which a mass is celebrated by ghosts every Christmas in the ruins of an old chapel, and "The New Master" (here titled The New Teacher"). 1900 Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper. A very good copy with bright spine stamping and clean text. (#134523).
