A novel translated into English in same year as BY HIS OWN MIGHT: A ROMANCE. Von Hillern (1836-1916) was an actress, and the daughter of a famous actress, Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer. Wilhelmine had a scandalous and secret lover affair with Herrman von Hillern, whom she married when pregnant in 1857. Her most famous and influential novel, THE VULTURE-WALLY, appeared in 1875. After her husband's death in 1882 she moved to Oberammergau where she is buried until 1911, writing novels, plays, and opera, and moving in the highest social circles. Her first novel was published in 1865, and AUS EIGENER KRAFT, her third, was serialized in 1870 and published in book form in 1872. She is of interest to German feminists. Quite scarce in first edition. A bit of rubbing to extremities, a very good copy with very clean interior. (#135709).
