"L'AMOUR SUPRÊME" [poem]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT SIGNED (TMsS). Sonnet (fourteen lines) on full sheet of letter size paper, ribbon copy, dated "Apr. 14, 1929" in different typewriter at top left and signed in full by author (black ink, forward slanting hand) at bottom. "A translation into English of one of Smith's own French poems, using the semi-Petrarchan sonnet form favored by him: two quatrains and a split sestet. This example, however, a lament on lost love, has the awkward phrasing suggestive of a literal translation, and a meter that wavers like a Cuban taxi." - Robert Eldridge. Sidney-Fryer, Donald. Emperor of Dreams: a Clark Ashton Smith Bibliography, p. 105. Old fold creases, fine. Provenance: Samuel Loveman papers. (#136368).
