MERELY MURDER. Garden City: Published for the Crime Club, Inc. by Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1935. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 2-303 [304: blank], original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, top edge stained red. First U.S. edition. Club member's issue with a skeleton holding a scroll with the words "Members' Edition" on the front cover. The first Inspector Hannasyde novel. "Equal to BLUNT INSTRUMENT, and therefore a masterpiece also." - Barzun and Taylor: A Catalogue of Crime (1989) #1739. "Although not so popular as her Regency romances Heyer's detective novels are better crafted and more enduring. They illustrate the style of mystery writing in her time while being sufficiently original to carry her unmistakable signature." - Pederson (ed), St. James Guide to Crime and Mystery Writers (4th ed.), pp. 508-10. Published in England as "DEATH IN THE STOCKS." Former owner's inked signature and date on front paste-down. Light wear to cloth along bottom edge, some insect tracking to front cover, some offsetting to endpapers, a very good copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with edges and flap folds reinforced on the inner surface with clear tape, light wear to spine ends and corners, rubbing to edges have been touched up to match the black background ink. The jacket appears to be a trade issue jacket, not the member's issue jacket. (#137107).
