Beck is an experienced cross country skier who has been ski touring in California for twenty-five years and, at the time of the publication of the 1980 edition, was director of Sierra Ski Touring in Mammoth Lakes, California . During the previous eight years he directed Nordic ski schools for the Sierra Club, Alpine Meadows, and in Sequoia National Park.
