(#139204) DELAPLAINE: OR, THE SACRIFICE OF IRENE. A NOVEL. Mansfield Tracy Walworth.

DELAPLAINE: OR, THE SACRIFICE OF IRENE. A NOVEL. New York: G. W. Carleton & Co., Publishers. London: J. C. Hotten, 1871. 12mo, pp. [1-6] 7-300, flyleaves at front and rear, original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, lavender endpapers. First edition. Occult romance set in Persia whose hero, Zenayi, is a benevolent immortal being who has lived since antediluvian times, advising emperors and amassing learning. The plot of the novel concerns his invitation to three young people -- two women and a man -- to bathe in a subterranean pool that confers immortality, health and beauty. One of the women accepts. Portions of the novel explore occult and scientific secrets of the Magi. Walworth's tale probably owes more than a little to Bulwer-Lytton's ZANONI (1842). None of Walworth's books are listed in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Wright (II) 2621. Some scattered foxing, mostly early and late, a very good copy. (#139204).
