DAS LENKBARE LUFTSCHIFF ... Deutsche Ausgabe. Berlin: Schreitersche Verlagsbuchhandlung, n.d. [1908]. Octavo. pp. [1-3] 4-295 [296: tailpiece], original pictorial maroon cloth, front panel stamped in gold, red, blue, green, brown, black, and white, spine panel stamped in black and gold, publisher's monogram stamped in black on rear panel, gold endpapers, all edges marbled. First edition. The only edition of this novel (The Dirigible) featuring Thomas Alva Edison, the greatest inventor in the world. This book is the first of the five "Thomas Alva Edison, der grosse Erfinder" books, some of them cheap plagiarisms of Wells, written by one "John Merriman" and pretending to be translations from the English. This is the first and least common of the five Merriman novels with Edison as the protagonist. A handsome boys' book with an advanced airship depicted on the book's front cover. Lexikon 1, pp. 186-8. Bloch (2002) 2125. Rottensteiner, "German SF" in Anatomy of Wonder (1987), p. 380. Former owner's name and faint ink stamp to front free endpaper, light rubbing to edges of cloth, a very good copy. A superior copy of this book. (#140751).
