THE GAUCHO MARTIN FIERRO. Adapted from the Spanish and rendered into English verse by Walter Owen. Buenos Aires: Editorial Pampa, n.d. [circa 1960]. Octavo, drawings by Alberto Guiraldes, bound in imitation green leather, front and spine panels stamped in gold, top edge stained red. Facsimile reprint of the 1935 Shakespeare Head edition. Epic poem about cowboy life in Argentina. The translator, Walter Owen, was a member of the Inklings writer group in England, and wrote a witchcraft novel, MORE THINGS IN HEAVEN (1947). This copy has been modified by an earlier owner into a de facto bilingual edition by pasting in sections of the original Spanish text next to each translated stanza. Also pasted in is a section of a dust jacket panel and some other related material. With dated ownership signature and business card of previous owner. The rectangles of pasted Spanish text are on acidic paper which has produced offsetting to the adjoining pages, and this addition of material also has puffed up the fore-edge of the binding. A curiosity. (#142671).
