ARTHUR MACHEN AND THE "SPHINX." [Lewes, East Sussex, England]: The Tartarus Press, [1992]. Octavo, pp. [1-24], illustrated with four tipped-in black-and-white photographic portraits, pictorial wrappers, stapled. First edition. Limited to 100 numbered copies. An appreciation of Ada Leverson, a literary socialite of the 1890s nicknamed "The Sphinx" by her good friend Oscar Wilde. The essay documents her meetings with Machen in the 1920s, which also involved Osbert Sitwell. A poignant sketch of the perils and pleasures of literary life. Like all Tartarus productions (in contrast to many small press and fanzine efforts), a beautifully designed and printed piece of work. A fine copy. (#142888).
