HISTORY OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES NAVY FROM ITS ORGANIZATION TO THE SURRENDER OF ITS LAST VESSEL. J. Thomas Scharf.

HISTORY OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES NAVY FROM ITS ORGANIZATION TO THE SURRENDER OF ITS LAST VESSEL. New York: Rogers & Sherwood, 1887. Octavo, pp. 824, numerous illustrations, original drab boards with printed title label affixed to spine panel. First edition. An ambitious detailed work by a former officer in the Confederate Navy. Former owner's signature dated 1942 on front free endpaper. Spine panel has numerous vertical splits but the gatherings are well-sewn and holding together; paper covering worn away along outer joints with cloth webbing showing; a clean and usable book but binding needs hinges strengthened. It's impressive that such a massive, heavy volume should still exist at all in such a fragile binding. (#147106).
