BODY AND SOUL: CONFLICTING BATTLE OF EMOTIONS, TWO MEN -- ONE WOMAN -- THE ETERNAL TRIANGLE. BASED ON THE MOTION PICTURE STORY BY KATHERINE NEWLIN BURT. New York: Jacobsen Publishing Co, Inc., . Octavo, pp. [3-6] 7-128 [129-130: blank] [note: text complete despite initial gap in pagination], original light blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. Burt is credited by online movie database IMDB with having written the story for the film. Whether she also wrote this novelization is a little unclear due to the ambiguity of grammar on the book's title page. The film, a melodrama set in the Swiss Alps, starred Lionel Barrymore as an old man crazed with jealousy for the young woman (played by Aileen Pringle) he "bought" after a card game, despite having been warned that she was liable to run away. In one scene (depicted on the cover of the dust jacket) he brands her so that she will always be his. In a confrontation between him and the man whom he suspects of trying to seduce her, he is rescued from the sin of murder by the intervention of an avalanche. Early ownership signature on front free endpaper dated 17 September 1931. Tiny bits of the dust jacket adhered to lower left corner of front cover, a very good copy in a poor pictorial dust jacket with the lower half of the spine panel missing, shelf wear at edges, and front flap separated along the fold; the film stills on the jacket are intact.
