First edition. The last and the pleasantest of Smollett's novels, an epistolary road story. A mixed state (no known priority), mostly showing variants of Warburton, et al. A1 and A2; volume 1: title page misdated MDCLXXI, all signature marks set in lower case type, letter dated "Aug. 4" on page v, page vi correctly numbered, "respected sir" and "your ... servant" on page ix, "Mrs. Gwyllim" on page 3 (as per A4, the Rothschild copy), page 147 correctly numbered; volume 2: "flag," page 2, line 3 and last word "this," page 2, line 7.
