A BRIDE FROM THE DESERT. Grant Allen, Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen.

A BRIDE FROM THE DESERT. New York: R. F. Fenno & Company, 112 Fifth Avenue, [1896]. Octavo, original decorated gray cloth stamped in orange, green and brown. First edition. Collects the title story (a short novel) and two short stories, "Dr. Greatrex's Engagement" and "The Backslider." This book does not appear to have been published in the UK. The two short stories originally appeared in Allen's STRANGE STORIES (1884) -- a rare book that eluded Wolff, who had thirty-two other Allen titles, and of which there does not seem to have an American edition. The title story of the present volume is a tale of adventure and romance set in North Africa. "Dr. Greatrex's Engagement" concerns a brilliant young physicist and doctor who believes he is going mad; a simple physiological explanation is found, allowing romance and career to proceed. "The Backslider" is about the emergence of an evangelical sect in London, the Gideonites. Small faint blind stamp on title page, a few tiny ink specks on top edge of text block, a near fine copy of an attractive book. (#148814).
