THE NEW ADAM ... Translated from the Original French by P. O. Crowhurst. London: Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd., [1926]. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-256, original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition in English. Translation of LE NOUVEL ADAM (1924). Brilliant doctor's experimental operation transforms dying mediocre medical student into a dedicated scientist of towering intellect, a wholly logical and unpleasant superman "devoted to science, but on an inhuman level." His scientific projects include the invention of a death ray that he tests on local villagers in rural France and the creation of artificial earthquakes by means of small atomic explosions. He is accidentally killed in a nuclear force field while engaged in his final project, a plan to set off an atomic explosion in the Netherlands "that will probably wipe out the human race" [Bleiler (1990)]. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 2-85; (1987) 2-94; and (1995) 2-104. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1903. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 185. Bleiler (1978), p. 169. Reginald 12354. Private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. Cloth a bit stained and dust soiled, spine panel a bit sunned, endpapers (printed on poor quality pulp paper stock) a bit age-darkened with offset on recto of half title leaf and verso of last leaf of text, else a very good copy. This uncommon, cheaply made book is rarely found in nice condition. (#149639).
