IN THE SHADE. Oscura, pseudonym.

IN THE SHADE. Ealing: Printed by J. Acworth, 1861. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-3] 4-111 [112: blank], original decorated green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in gold, rear panel stamped in blind, yellow coated endpapers. First edition. Presentation copy inscribed "Mrs. Urguhart / With Oscura's / love." Collects three short stories and eighteen poems. Supernatural stories and poems; the former are a brief religious fantasy, a sentimental ghost story, a tragic mystery of true love thwarted. The less said about the poetry, the better. Amateurishly written, undoubtedly a vanity publication. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 170. Reginald 37999. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Cloth rubbed and soiled, lacks rear free endpaper, a good, internally clean copy. A rare book. (#149645).
