PETER SCHLEMIHL From the German of Lamotte Fouque. London: G. and W. B. Whittaker, Ave Maria Lane, 1824. 12mo, pp. [i-ix] x-xii 2-165 [166: blank] [167-168: ads], eight inserted plates with illustrations by George Cruikshank, modern decorated boards with green leather shelf back. First edition in English, third state. This state is dated 1824 and the publisher's address has no hyphen. Cruikshank's name is misspelled "Cruickshank" and page [ix], lines 4-5 has misspelling "aukwardness" for "awkwardness," both present in all three states, but corrected for the second edition published later in 1824. This anonymous translation of PETER SCHLEMIHLS WUNDERSAME GESCHICHTE by Sir John Bowring was misattributed to Fouque who edited Chamisso's work for it's initial appearance in German "One of the classics of German Romantic literature, first published in 1813 [i.e. 1814] ... Very amusing period piece." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 371. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature III, pp. 1234-37. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-27. Bleiler (1978), p. 41. Reginald 02831. Block, The English Novel 1740-1850, p. 38. Cohn (1924) 475. See Bloch (2002) 613. The half title leaf is present, but the terminal leaf of publisher's ads is missing. Some staining to text block and plates, mainly to margins, early owner's name on title page, a good copy. (#150799).
