LESLIE'S FATE AND HILDA OR THE GHOST OF ERMINSTEIN. Bristol: J. W. Arrowsmith ... London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co Limited, [1892]. Large octavo, pp. [1-11] 12-214 [215-216: blank], illustrations by Evelyn Stuart Hardy, original pictorial maroon cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in orange. First edition. Two short supernatural novels; the former an engaging mass of absurdities featuring, to name but a few, an enchanted Indian valley in the Scottish Highlands, an amorous cobra woman, and a brace of family ghosts; the latter is tamer, confining the plot to the fulfillment of a Hungarian family curse by a malevolent spirit. Author was H. Rider Haggard's older, and notably less talented, brother. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 723, Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 101. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 239. Bleiler (1978), p. 89. Reginald 06515. Wolff 2834. Cloth worn at spine ends and corner tips, cloth rubbed along outer joints, several stains to front cover, inner hinges cracked, a reading copy of a very scarce book. (#150893).
