HAMISH MUNRO'S EXPERIMENT: A THRILLING ROMANCE OF THE EAST AND THE ANTIPODES. By Vernon George [pseudonym]. London: Arthur H. Stockwell, Ltd., n.d. [1935]. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-288, original blue cloth, front panel lettered in gold and ruled in blind, spine panel lettered and ruled in gold. First edition. Cross-dressing techno-thriller, set in the near future in Tasmania, India and elsewhere, about the discovery of Kilburnite and the perfection of the Munro Storage Battery, a battery about the size of a suitcase which can propel an electrically driven aircraft ten thousand miles without recharging. The inventor's nephew is given the task of keeping the prototype and the formula out of the hands of foreign criminals and delivering it to British authorities in England, which he does mostly disguised as a woman. An entertaining read. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 90. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978) or Reginald (1979; 1992). Hubin (1994), p. 321. Bookplate of noted collector Oswald Train affixed to front paste-down. Spine panel a bit sunned, gold lettering on spine panel a bit dull, a couple of small, light stains to cloth, a very good copy. A very scarce book. COPAC reports 4 copies; OCLC adds one more (UCLA). (#150992).
