THE CAR OF PHOEBUS. Robert James Lees.

THE CAR OF PHOEBUS. London: John Long, n.d. [1903]. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-387 [388] + 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "March, 1903" inserted at rear, original pictorial blue gray cloth, front panel stamped in orange and black, spine panel stamped in gold, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Lees on the half title page: "To / Ellie / from / Robt Jas Lees / May 25/03." An occult lost race novel by a well-known British clairvoyant (died circa 1931) who supposedly, while in a trance, led the police to the residence of the physician who committed the Jack-the-Ripper murders. Bleiler (1978), p. 121. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Cloth rubbed at edges and a bit dusty, pulpy endpapers tanned, text paper edges lightly foxed, hairline crack along inner front hinge which is still holding tight, still a very good copy. A scarce book. (#151614).
