HOFFMANN'S STRANGE STORIES. From the German. Boston: Burnham Brothers, 1855. 12mo, pp. [1-5] 6-444, flyleaves at front and rear, original decorated dark green cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition. The first collection of Hoffmann's tales to be published in America, including many stories printed here for the first time in English. "While the publisher does not reveal sources, the probabilities are that this collection, like HOFFMANN'S FAIRY TALES (1857), was translated through a French intermediary version. This is the first English language appearance in book form for many of these stories and the only appearance for a couple. The translation, however, is very bad. Several of the stories have been rewritten and do not represent Hoffmann's work." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 825. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 1-40. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 204-05. Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature IV, pp. 1547-53. Light wear at spine ends, a very good copy. A superior copy of an uncommon book. (#151670).
