THE MYSTERY OF CLOOMBER. Arthur Conan Doyle.

THE MYSTERY OF CLOOMBER. London: Ward and Downey, 12, York Street, Covent Garden, 1889. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-151 [152: printer's imprint], contemporary pebble-grained brown cloth. First edition. Doyle's second book, issued in both paper wrappers in shilling shocker format and in cloth. A low-grade occult thriller about Oriental revenge, not among his best stories, but a rare book in first edition. The book is dated 1889 but was issued in 1888, a common practice for books issued late in the year. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 549. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 198. Bleiler (1978), p. 63. Reginald 04500. Green and Gibson A2. Topp, Victorian Yellowbacks & Paperbacks, 1849-1905, VIII, p. 330. The paperbound issue bound in cloth without the paper wrappers or the publisher's advertisements. Bookplate of collector Sydney John Robinson affixed to the front paste-down. A very good copy.
