A WORLD OF WONDERS; OR DIVERS DEVELOPMENTS, SHOWING THE THOROUGH TRIUMPH OF ANIMAL MAGNETISM IN NEW ENGLAND. ILLUSTRATED BY THE POWER OF PREVISION IN MRS. MATILDA FOX, AND THE POINT OF THE PENCIL, BY D. C. JOHNSTON. By Joel R. Peabody, M. B. Fellow of the College of 'Pothecaries ... Third Edition. Boston: Published by Robert S. Davis, No. 77 Washington Street, 1838. Small 12mo, pp. [1-2] [i-iii] iv [v-vi] [5] 6-158, flyleaves at front and rear, eight inserted plates with etchings by David Claypoole Johnston, original quarter dark green calf and decorated black cloth, spine panel titled and ruled in gold. First edition, third printing with "third edition" on the title page. "Some utopias on other planets. Includes a Cockaigne" (Sargent, p. 45). Sabin indicates that "Joel R. Peabody" is a pseudonym, but it is likely that this is the Joel R. Peabody who was a deacon of the Congregational Church of Topsfield, Massachusetts, from 17 September 1828 until 24 July 1861. Locke, Voyages in Space (2011) V-524. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 45 (recording the second edition; first edition not located). Sabin 59371. Hamilton 943 (noting the second and third editions; first edition not located). Not in Wright. Signature of Geo. L. Peabody (a relative?) at the top edge of the front free endpaper. Bookplate of C. B. Farrar affixed to front paste-down. Calf a bit rubbed, slight loss from crown, scattered foxing, occasionally heavy, to endpapers and throughout the text, as always with this book, actually a very good, well above average copy. First printing copies of this book are rare; the second and third printings are not too common, especially in nice condition. (#153361).
