First U.S. edition. The novel was published the same year in the UK by Sampson Low, Marston. Historical romance set on "Anamotu," an imaginary island in the Society Islands archipelago where a beautiful English woman kidnapped by the natives in revenge for the notorious "black birding" that flourished there in the nineteenth century is adopted by Heiarrii, the wife of Anamotu chieftain. Taurua, a Tahitian prince, meets a hero's death resisting the annexation of the island group by the French in the 1880. Cloth dusty, small private library stamp on front paste-down and later owner's signature to same, a very good copy. (#154642).
