An important work on old English ballads by an influential scholar of folklore and ancient languages, a student of Francis James Child. Gummere's best known work is his translation of Beowulf published in 1910 as part of the Harvard Classic Series. OLD ENGLISH BALLADS was issued as part of Ginn's "Athenaeum Press Series" edited by G. L. Kittredge and C. T. Winchester. Some occasional penciled marginalia by a Medieval literature scholar, but a lovely copy overall. (#154683).
