MERVYN CLITHEROE. London: George Routledge & Co., Farringdon Street. New York: 18, Beekman Street, 1858. Octavo, pp. [1-6] [i-v] vi-viii 2-372, 22 inserted plates plus inserted frontispiece and vignette title leaf with engravings after drawings by Hablot K. Browne, three-quarter calf and marbled boards. First edition in book form, preceded by an issue in parts. Sensation romance recounting the travels and adventures of a young man seeking the lost will of an elderly relative. His adventures include encounters with a villainous gypsy swindler as well as an excursion into the (ostensibly) haunted house of an amiable eccentric ("Old Hazy," whose brain has been turned by magic books). There is considerable rationalized supernaturalism. Bleiler (1948), p. 19. Sadleir 21a. Wolff 60a. Calf rubbed, a very good copy. The front panel of an envelope with Ainsworth's signature is laid in. A fairly obscure Ainsworth romance which is uncommon in parts or publisher's cloth. (#154957).
