First edition. Weird mystery novel set in the early nineteenth century about a young farmer who falls in love with a smuggler's daughter. Her grandfather has genuine occult powers, second sight, etc., as does "Soft Fred," a mystic who interacts with the natural world. The wizard, who has amassed a huge fortune "by means of honest contraband" is actually Sir Joseph Mallard, who was outlawed and stripped of his Northern estate following the Jacobite rising of 1745. Slight spine lean, endpapers a bit tanned, a bright, nearly fine copy. (#156535).
