COMPOSTS OF TRADITION ... A BOOK OF SHORT STORIES DEALING WITH TRADITIONAL SEX AND DOMESTIC SITUATIONS. Chicago: O. M. Heath and Co., [1913]. Octavo, pp. [1-14] 15-303 [304: ad], six inserted plates with illustrations from photographs, original purple cloth, front panel stamped in gold and blind, spine panel stamped in blind. First edition. Eccentric utopian reform literature specifically focused on the current situation in Chicago's red light district, that occupies "valuable territory," upon which Heath hopes "model tenement houses" will be built as part of his grand plan for the regeneration of society, remedies for which are "proposed in the following stories." Heath's story collection is "dedicated to Hygienic Motherhood." "The Maid of the Neptunian Strand" (pages 65-118) is a "Munchausenesque tall story about extravagant polar adventures, life on the planet Neptune, and the notion that one really has only half a soul, the other half more often than not residing with one of the inhabitants of another world." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 59. Also present is "Jonathan Buck, His Curse" (pages 121-57), a supernatural tale about a dead woman's leg and its affect on the murderer. Heath's goal is racial purification and women's rights: he condones suicide and sterilization to achieve this goal (see his appendix, "Redintegrations of an Iconoclast" pp. 283-93). Of considerable interest is his announcement, with synopsis, of a utopian work, A TWENTIETH CENTURY VISIT TO UTOPIA, part three of which describes the feminist utopia of Atlantis. According to Heath, the first part was published "about four years ago" (in a magazine or newspaper presumably), but the full work remains unpublished. Locke, Voyages in Space (2011) V355. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 H-442. A bright, clean, nearly fine copy in the rare printed dust jacket that is stained on the spine and rear panels and worn at edges. The jacket title is TRADITIONAL SEX AND DOMESTIC SITUATIONS. (#156889).
