(#156898) THE STUDENT AND THE BODY-SNATCHER AND OTHER TRIFLES. Robinson K. Leather, Richard Le Gallienne.
THE STUDENT AND THE BODY-SNATCHER AND OTHER TRIFLES ...

THE STUDENT AND THE BODY-SNATCHER AND OTHER TRIFLES. London: Elkin Mathews, at the sign of The Bodley Head, in Vigo Street, W., 1890. Small octavo, pp. [1-2] [1-5] 6-76, original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed. First edition. A collection of ironic fables and macabre tales very much in the decadent style then in vogue. In the title story a nonbeliever is carried off by the Devil, in "The Monk" a deal is made with the Devil, "David and Jonathan," is a tale of revenge and murder at sea, etc. We think this was Le Gallienne's first book of fiction. At the time this book was published Le Gallienne (1866-1947) was associated with Elkin Mathews and John Lane and, as an adviser and contributor to THE YELLOW BOOK, a literary force in the 1890s. The breakup of the 1890s movement made London intolerable and Le Gallienne thereafter lived the life of of a cosmopolitan man of letters, dying in France in 1947. Another forgotten book overlooked by the scholars and bibliographers of fantastic literature. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963), Reginald (1979; 1992), Tuck (1974), or Locke, Spectrum I-III. Not in Wolff. Colbeck I, p. 479. Cutler and Stiles, p. 103. Tiny 1921 gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Buckram rubbed and scuffed, endpapers tanned, a very good copy. Many libraries have this book, but it is somewhat uncommon in the trade. (#156898).
