Vance, John Holbrook, writing as "Jack Vance." THE BAGFUL OF DREAMS [Novelette]. Typescript, 35 pages. The second (first typewritten) draft, typed on one side only, heavily reworked by hand with some long passages written on versos. Not dated, but circa 1977 or earlier. Accompanied by a typed carbon copy of an alternate first page with handwritten continuation on the verso. This odd page is signed by Vance. Also present is four typed pages, probably from the 41-page typed final draft, as well as a one-page handwritten "Moon Moth" fragment. A draft of the second of Vance's final two stories set in the Dying Earth, a continuation of THE EYES OF THE OVERWORLD. The story was first published in FLASHING SWORDS #4 (1977), edited by Lin Carter. The typescript is heavily reworked in a variety of fountain pen inks, with many changes, corrections, annotations and some doodling intermixed. The manuscript gives insight to Vance’s creative process. As to his working method, Vance often began by jotting down scenes, which he later quilted together. He rarely "outlined." Until later in his career when his eyesight failed, Vance often wrote the first draft in longhand, then a much more complete first typed draft (the version offered here), then a second, and sometimes third typed draft. The typescript is in excellent condition. Vance manuscripts rarely appear for sale and this is a highly desirable example. Enclosed in a custom quarter leather clamshell box. (#157179).
